We are pleased to announce that Michael Boucher has been elevated to the ASLA Council of Fellows. Election to the ASLA Council of Fellows is among the highest honors the ASLA bestows on members and is based on their works, leadership, management, knowledge, and service. ASLA will formally recognize its 2019 Fellows for their exceptional contributions to the landscape architecture profession and society at large at the ASLA 2019 Conference on Landscape Architecture, November 15-18, San Diego. Congratulations Michael!

Construction has commenced on the Veterans Plaza at Bates College. The space is designed to be contemplative but also large enough to hold small gatherings to honor the service and sacrifice of Bates veterans.

Michael joined BAC Landscape Architecture Dean, Maria Bellalta and landscape architect Dan Gordon to determine Harvard Graduate School of Design’s 2020 ASLA Student Awards. The jury reviewed the work of six students and was pleased to issue three awards.

Michael was one of five jurors reviewing designs of students in John Ronan’s Illinois Institute of Technology architecture studio. The group focused on the daunting task of designing a ‘cemetery for the unclaimed’, located on the south branch of the Chicago River.

Next week, Michael and Jeff are attending the American Society of Landscape Architects Annual Conference in San Diego, California November 15 - 18. On Sunday, Michael will be formally inducted into the Council of Fellows.

Michael is again an associate level member of the Josep Lluís Sert Council for the 2019 - 2020 school year. The Council is a community of annual leadership donors who are committed to supporting the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, its students, and the future of design education. Sert Council members play an integral role in helping to advance the GSD's preeminent status and provide essential funding to support the students, faculty and degree programs.

 Qianyu led a morning site workshop at Casco Bay High School in Portland kicking-off the Freshman Expeditionary class. The class commenced investigation of the Morrill's Corner neighborhood in Portland with the findings from the ‘The Case for Growth: Growing Portland - Not Whether But How', a collaboration between Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, Portland Society for Architecture, the Muskie School for Public Service at the University of Southern Maine and Creative Portland to start the conversation on why the Portland region needs to grow, what that growth could look like and how to ensure a vision for Portland that includes everyone.

Shortlisted Designs have been revealed for University College Dublin’s Future Campus project. The competition focuses on enlivening and enhancing the University’s extensive campus, creating a highly-visible and welcoming entrance precinct, as well as a charismatic new architectural addition, the Centre for Creative Design. The jury will meet in July 2018 to interview the shortlist and select the winner, who is expected to be announced in August 2018.

MBLA is working on circulation and planting designs for the second phase of the Maine Medical Center campus expansion which includes a parking garage and integrated employee transit. The site plan was recently submitted to the city Planning Board for review.

The new residence hall, recently named the Graham Shimmield Residence Hall, at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences won a design Citation Award at last night's AIA Maine Design Awards celebration. Congrats to Scott Simons Architects and the entire project team.

MBLA recently completed a Concept Planning Study of the Calhoun Corridor District on the University of Cincinnati campus. The overall concept plan of this eight acre site creates a cohesive district and framework for future projects including new buildings, building renovations and site improvements.

Portland's Canal Plaza is undergoing a renovation to bring new life to the under-utilized space. The newly designed 17,000-square-foot plaza will feature a central, single-story retail building, along with new granite paving, seating and trees. Completion is scheduled for Fall 2017. mbla has recently become engaged with several projects on the University of Cincinnati campus. We are working on a planning study for the southwest corner of campus known as the Calhoun District and also recently commenced work on the renovation of Calhoun Hall.

mbla teamed with Canal 5 Studio and submitted an entry for the Bayside Adapts Design Challenge Competition presented by the City of Portland. Portland’s Bayside neighborhood is a growing urban redevelopment district that is challenged by low topography vulnerable to flooding and aging public infrastructure. Teams were tasked with addressing ways that Bayside can continue to grow and succeed in a future with higher sea levels. All entries are posted on the City website.

Construction has commenced at Canal Plaza. Crews are working to redevelop the plaza with 17,000 square feet of granite, new trees, a feature sculptural bench and a small cafe.

mbla is part of the design team for the 10 acre waterfront property at 58 Fore Street in Portland, Maine. Conceptual designs include plans to reinvigorate the historic core of the former Portland Company site and re-engage the waterfront. mbla, in collaboration with Canal 5 Studio, is studying various ways to improve this underused plaza in downtown Portland, Maine. The team explored opportunities for accommodating various events to better serve the diverse building occupants and draw more foot traffic from the street. The Portland Press Herald recently published this article elaborating on City support for the project. Construction is anticipated to be completed in 2017.

mbla is immensely proud to have been a member of John Ronan Architects’ team competing for the opportunity to design the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Ronan’s team was one of seven finalists and among those who presented designs for the Jackson Park and the Washington Park sites to the Obama Foundation Board and to the President and Mrs. Obama.

mbla is a design consultant to the team of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, FBM and Ekistics, who are collaborating with the Armour Group to develop a masterplan and design studies for the Queen's Marque Waterfront Development in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Currently a parking lot, this prime waterfront site is being developed into a mixed-use district including a hotel, luxury residential units, office space, commercial space and public space. On May 9th, ground was broken to begin construction in earnest for a new 32-bed residence for students and visiting scientists at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay, Maine. It is expected that the new residence will be ready for occupancy in September 2017.

The finalists for the Congress Square Redesign project will speak at a public forum on Wednesday, May 4th at the Portland Museum of Art from 5:30 - 7:30pm. The event will be free and open to the public and will include a presentation from each finalist and a question and answer session.

Michael along with OLIN, Peter Walker and Partners, and site design group is leading a team of students to propose a flexible master plan for the coming fifty years in this charette titled IMAGINING THE ILLINOIS CAMPUS: 2017-2067

We recently completed preliminary design for the Telluride Forever Park. This public park is a gift to the community from the Telluride Foundation and will provide outdoor space for world-class sculpture as well as public gathering space.
