Private Residence
Edgartown, Massachusetts
Located on Katama Bay on Martha’s Vineyard, this residence includes a main house, pool house, garage/studio building, and several distinct outdoor living spaces. Working closely with the architect, we defined a spacious court with an existing majestic oak tree as the central organizing feature of the compound. A pergola demarcates the north and south sides, connecting the pool house and garage/studio to the main house. To the north, expansive stone terraces offer an outdoor kitchen/dining area, fire pit, pool and spa, and garden plantings. A tall irregular stone wall forms the backdrop to a grove seating area with a linear water feature and stone dust paving. This tall stone wall is repeated to the south as the west and north façades of the garage and as a freestanding wall concealing a formal kitchen garden. Low cut stone walls comprise a second wall typology, defining the end of the court, the parking area, and the edge of the north terraces. An existing lawn is maintained along the coastal bluff, while the surrounding native oak groves to the north and east are edited and enhanced with native understory plantings.
