Waynflete School

Portland, Maine

Teamed with Scott Simons Architects, MBLA developed a Campus Master Plan for the Waynflete School, a small private school in Portland, Maine.  The plan transformed a series of disparate back yards and underutilized landscape spaces into a cohesive and comprehensible campus landscape.  A matrix of simple walks, local granite walls, crisp granite benches, planes of evergreen groundcover and specimen shade trees serve as unifying elements throughout the campus. The school’s setting in a historic residential urban neighborhood necessitated careful choreography of pedestrian and vehicular circulation. Several discrete projects within the plan were designed and constructed, including a new entry to the school, a series of landscape spaces for active and passive uses, and courtyards associated with a new Performing Arts Center, Middle School Yard, and Sanctuary.
